Happy October, everyone! I hope you're really feeling the season, because all the Top 5 Wednesdays for this month revolve around scary/supernatural/paranormal books and characters.

To kick off this month of paranormal-themed posts, we're talking about books featuring witches. When I first saw this week's topic, I got super excited, because I love witchy stories! But then I realized that many of my most favorite witches are actually in TV or movies (and that some of the books I've read most recently that would fall into this category have not been my favorites at all).

So, despite an initial hiccup, here are five of my favorite books either about witches or featuring witches. (You won't find Harry Potter on this list because OF COURSE HARRY POTTER IS ON THIS LIST.)

The Witches (book and movie) absolutely scared the crap out of me as a kid. The story also rocked my world, because I had no idea books could be like that. I haven't reread it in probably 20 years; does it stand the test of time?

I couldn't write a post about witches in literature and not include the Weird Sisters!

I've never seen the play, but I loved the retelling of Elphaba's story the first time I read it, which was about 6 years ago.

Manon is one of my all-time favorite characters. I especially loved her character arc in Queen of Shadows and Empire of Storms. I also love her relationship with Elide, and how Elide's story develops over those two books.

I still haven't read all of The Mortal Instruments (and I don't know if I ever will?), and I know Magnus is a warlock, but he was definitely one of my my favorite characters in the whole series.

If this list had included witches from television and film, you would have seen some combination of the following: The Craft, Willow gifs, Vampire Diaries, Charmed, Hocus Pocus, and AHS: Coven.
