Top 5 Wednesday: 2018 Wishlist

Top 5 Wednesday from Goodreads

This weekly book meme is brought by Top 5 Wednesday on Goodreads.

Well, as we all wish a fond farewell to the garbage fire that was 2017, let's look toward 2018 with all the hope we can muster.

When it comes to books, I continue to have high hopes for fun, fantasy, friendship, and flirtation. I read some incredible books this year (stay tuned for my end-of-year wrap-up report), and continue to wish for the best for this next year.

This Top 5 Wednesday is not so much about those books we're looking forward to reading in 2018 (stay tuned for that one, too) but, rather, about what themes, tropes, genres, etc. we're looking forward to adding to our Read shelves. I doubt if many (or any) of these will be surprising for anyone who's read a handful of my posts, but here's my wishlist for the next year:

1. Female Friendship

No more mean girl or passive aggressive female friendships! Give me realistic depictions of girl friends taking on the world together, please and thanks.

2. Unique Fantasy

This one may be a little cheap, because there's fantasy coming out all. the. time. And at least some of it has to be original. But I'm ready to read some fantasy that knocks my socks off. I don't even care if it sticks to many of the same old tropes, as long as it turns something on its head.

3. Breathtaking Romance

Historical marriages of convenience? Sounds good. Slow burn with shy kid from class? Fantastic. Forbidden romance? Okay. Realistic and diverse depictions of love? YES PLEASE. Meet cute contemporary set in other countries? AWESOME. Bossy billionaires? Meh, but if it works...

4. Retellings

Give me more retellings. Fairy tale, Shakespeare, Jane Austen--let me see my favorite stories spun again.

5. Hate-to-Love

Oh, was this technically covered under #3? Whoops! Well, I hope that we have lots of great stories that revolve around people who think they hate each other realizing they have more in common than they thought and making the world a better place because of it. (See also: Morally ambiguous characters.)

What's on your bookish wishlist for 2018??
