Top 5 Wednesday Rewind: Favorite Tropes

Top 5 Wednesday from Goodreads Series I'm Not Going To Finish

This weekly book meme is brought by Top 5 Wednesday on Goodreads.

Happy Wednesday! This week is getting to me because, even though we had Monday off for the holiday, it still feels like it is d-r-a-g-g-i-n-g. So much so, in fact, that I had to go back and double check that I spelled dragging correctly.

All this month, we've been doing Top 5 Wednesday Rewinds, where each blogger goes deep and finds those topics we never hit or need to hit again.

As for What She's Read, this week's topic comes to us from July 2015.

I've talked about my favorite character tropes a bit in the past, but this week I'm going all in. These are my five all time favorite character tropes.

5. Hate-to-love

Sometimes this one doesn't turn out so well. Sometimes the story is a bit problematic, but I'll still pick it up most of the time. It's probably because I've never had any hint of this in my real life--if I don't like it you, that's just it--so I'm always intrigued when it works out for the characters I love. HOW WILL THEY EVER MAKE IT WORK?

Faves: Almost any relationship in any Penelope Douglass book, about half of the books with Beautiful in the title

4. Lovable Villain

You know exactly the kind of villain I'm talking about--the one who hints at a decent heart, the one who is just too clever, too quick, too goddamned awesome to just be the bad guy. Sometimes you hope this villain either ends up killing the hero or bringing him/her to the dark side (or at least some intense making out). Either way, you can't wait for their chapters.

Faves: Manon from ToG series, The Darkling from the Grisha trilogy, Cardan from The Cruel Prince

3. Big [Sports] Guy On Campus

WHY DO I LOVE THIS ONE? I've asked myself this about three hundred times but I cannot get enough of stories where the big sports guy on campus gets hit hard with the love hammer (no, that isn't a euphemism, just a bad turn of phrase).

Faves: Drew Baylor & Anna Jones from The Hook Up, Hannah Wells & Garrett Graham in The Deal

2. Quirky Artist

Okay, STAY WITH ME FOR A MINUTE. Sometimes the artist trope is unbearable, and I totally understand that. But when it's done right...you just know it's one of the best.

Faves: Cath from Fangirl, Eliza from Eliza and Her Monsters

1. Love Triangles

I'm just going for it with my number one. Some people completely hate love triangles, and while I get it, I can't deny that I just about live for them. WHO WILL END UP TOGETHER? I will stay up all night until I figure it out.

Faves: Everyone in the Throne of Glass series, Shatter Me, the Grisha Trilogy!

Okay, so what are some of your favorite tropes? Are any of my all-time favorites on your all-time most hated lists? I'm ready!
